Study trip

Tanzania / South Africa / Middle East / Morocco / Egypt

Sunnmøre has it all! Actually, you don't need more, but you get more. On the line tours, you get the world included.

You go to places and meet people you would have difficulty reaching on your own. Ignorance and prejudice are challenged and replaced with understanding and empathy. This is learning. That's why we travel at the folk high school.

Tanzania

In Tanzania you get up close to African culture, nature and folk life.

In the small village of Ilula, you will meet the school's Stop Poverty partner. Here you will also have a unique encounter with a Masai tribe before the stay ends with the class visiting their host family in small groups. Then you will spend a day in the countryside with a family who live in earthen houses with thatched roofs and cook their food over a fire. This is everyday life for them, and a completely unusual experience for you.

On the study trip, you will of course experience a magnificent safari with lions and elephants in Mikumi National Park.

For Musikk.Friluft, the stay in Tanzania ends with a djembe course, azure seas and chalky white beaches in Zanzibar. For Global.Safari, the trip continues to Lushoto where the focus is on the global Peacemaker work, before the journey continues to South Africa.

South Africa

Cape Town has it all; nature, religion, culture, history, food, people-to-people encounters and extreme sports activities.

South Africa is for many the ultimate travel destination. Cape Town is located on the southwestern tip of the African continent, between the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic. The city has been a stopover on the journey between Europe and Asia for centuries. The South Pole is just a long boat ride away.

This trip will focus on topics such as apartheid, global citizenship, and activities such as workshops, skydiving, surfing, golf, safaris, and the world's highest bungee jump at 216 meters. There is also time for a host family visit with overnight accommodations and a visit to Nelson Mandela's prison cell on Robben Island.

Several different lines travel to South Africa. The content will vary slightly from line to line and you can find more information about the itinerary on the different line pages.

Middle East

The Middle East Meeting is a meeting with people from occupied Palestine who are working for justice and peace.

We gain insight into history and the political situation, but most of all a meeting with those who live there – people who are in various ways affected by the conflict and occupation. We have previously traveled to Israel/Palestine, but because of the war we have traveled to neighboring Jordan in the past year. There we have been visited by our Palestinian friends and partners and in this way gained first-hand knowledge of what is happening in Gaza and the West Bank.

In Jordan we visit the ancient city of Petra, swim in the Dead Sea, hike with Bedouins and maybe even sleep under the open sky in the desert. The final destination for the 2026-27 school year will be decided in consultation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' travel advice.

Morocco

Surf camp in Taghazout, diving courses in Tangier and climbing in the Atlas Mountains

On the 15-day study trip to Morocco, you will first spend a week at a surf camp. Taghazout is world-famous for its many spots and delivers a great atmosphere regardless of level. You will also have days of dune surfing, deep-water soloing, snorkeling and canyoning.

In the Atlas Mountains near the Sahara Desert, climbing and mountaineering await you up to 2500 m above sea level. Your stay in Morocco ends with a Padi Open Water diving course that allows you to dive with oxygen down to 18 meters. This takes place in Tangier with a good temperature in the sea and a pleasant 20-25 degrees in the air.

Egypt

Egypt has world-class diving.

In Sharm el Sheikh on the Red Sea you will find Maldivian-like beaches, crystal clear water, dozens of diving spots with coral reefs and a water temperature of 25-30 degrees. You will have days of snorkeling and diving with air. You will also receive an internationally recognized "PADI Open Water Diver" certificate, which makes it possible to dive with oxygen on your own.

The travel destination may change due to the political situation or other reasons.
